The Hutt Valley Singers started as The Upper Hutt Home and School Association Male Voice Choir in August 1933. Since its inception in 1933, the choir changed names a few times over the years and in 2004 was changed to our current Hutt Valley Singers. In the process it has swung all the way from an all-male choir to mixed choir, to all-female for a few months in the early 1990s, and back to mixed voices today.
On November 8, 1933 the choir’s first ever concert was at Wi Tako Prison (now known as Rimutaka Prison), conducted by, S. W. Josland and accompanied, Mrs. L. W. Tomlin. The choir sang a variety of songs including the National Anthem, God Save the King, Creation’s Hymn by Beethoven, Pussy’s in the Well by Herbert and Little Tommy went a-Fishing, by Macy.
Fast forward to 2023, the Hutt Valley Singers' most recent concert was a joint choir with the Major Minors Children's Choir, at St Hilda’s Church Hall, Upper Hutt, singing all Disney songs.
